Past Pupils' Union

The Assumption Past Pupils Union has survived for well over half a century and is the envy of many schools. It exists primarily to perpetuate the friendships established during our days at Assumption, as well as to support the Sisters in their missionary work.

We run several fund-raising functions in the course of the year, the most successful being the Mission Club. This is a ten-week draw, beginning each January. The cost is £5, and each week we have prizes of £20, £15, £10 & £10. On the 5th and 10th week, we have an additional prize of £50.

We have also several social events during the year. In our annual golf outing, past pupils compete for the prestigious Maureen Harbison Memorial Trophy. There are also fabulous prizes for the highest scoring guest (non-past pupil) and non-handicapper. In fact, there is a prize for 'everybody in the audience'! After fifteen successful golf competitions in Royal County Down, Newcastle, it was decided in 2006 to change the venue to Downpatrick Golf Course.

Now in 2010 we are on the move again – this time we have our sights set on Spa Golf Club, where past pupils Maureen Hanna (née McEvoy) and her sister Kathleen are Lady Captain and President. Pauline Coll (née O’Hare) will be defending her title. The date to note, all you golfers, is Sunday 5^th September. The highlight of the year is always our Annual Reunion. Last year (2009), there was a good turnout, many from the classes of 1959 and 1979. The vast majority were attending for the very first time, although some of us really enjoy it every year. As always, the meal was terrific and we were delighted with the evening. Several stayed overnight, taking advantage of La Mon’s offer every year of accommodation at a reduced tariff to guests at the reunion.

We now appeal to ALL past pupils, but particularly to those who started in Assumption in 1960, 1970 and 1980, or who joined those classes on the way up the school, to join us for the reunion on Saturday 19^th June, once again in La Mon House Hotel, Ballygowan. We hope this is giving those of you who are living abroad plenty of notice so you can plan your holiday home!

The Past Pupils’ Newsletter is published twice a year. It informs about coming events, and includes articles by and news of past pupils. We depend on you to keep us informed. If you have any contribution, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Sallie Caughey or Mary Kane.

The annual fee of £2 to cover postage is payable at the Reunion in June, but you can register at any time for inclusion in our mailing list by forwarding your fee to:-
