Careers Education and Guidelines
|
The importance of Careers Education and Guidance is fully acknowledged within the school curriculum. As well as being taught as a Cross Curricular theme, a Careers Education programme is time tabled for all pupils in years 8 to 14. Within the careers programme, emphasis is placed on the development of personal awareness and of the skills related to educational training and occupational opportunities. Pupils are helped to make informed decisions and choices in relation to Personal Career Planning. They are encouraged to undertake extensive personal research of their chosen occupational areas, using available computer packages and relevant literature. In addition, one to one interviews are arranged with both Careers teachers and the Careers Officer.
The school also organises information evenings for parents and hosts abiennial Careers Convention where pupils and their parents can meet representatives from a wide range of professions and industry. Our senior pupils are offered opportunities to explore and develop their knowledge of Higher Education and the world of work. In Year 13 all pupils benefit from a one day Business Insight Conference where they gain valuable managerial experience. In addition, they participate in one week’s work experience which enables them to gain first hand experience of the world of work.
Year 14 pupils avail of the opportunities to attend the annual Open Days of local Universities. All Year 14 pupils take part in a one day Conference on Interview Techniques and take part in simulated interview situations with experienced interviewers who assess and discuss their individual performances.
